How Stickam sticks out

In newspaper land the Net thingy -- "it's out there" -- is still a bit of a major disconnect. As if TV alone weren't already a thorn in our sides, now along comes even more content, much of it grossly written and stunningly inaccurate, to foul up the works.

In this context, getting up to speed on the phenomenon of online video conduits is wickedly challenging.

I'll freely admit that ink-stained scribes all secretly chuckle to see something out there putting the boots to our broadcast brethren. And it is cool logging into blip.tv and YouTube. Plus, gotuit is generating a lot of electronic press-kit materials from major labels these days, too. There are line-ups at the digital viewing theatre.

So how do you launch yet another application into the virtual chest and make it stand out?

That's the question I put to Aaron Novak, the guy behind Stickam (www.stickam.com), a six-month-old, free-communication tool that's recently joined the mass of other sites desperately wanting you to use them for showing that joke reel you shot on the long weekend when you were, y'know, inspired.

"Actually, we began working on a way for video conferencing with our parent company in Japan," says Novak. "But we also wanted to develop an all-in-one tool you could put on your sms site or blog that would let you post video, audio and all the other stuff that goes along with webcam technology."

Flash-based, the Stickam is "pretty much" platform independent and quite happy to work with PCs, assorted webcams and Macs. As a hook to separate itself from its competitors, the idea is that Stickam.com is about enabling live video feeds from just about wherever. More than 80,000 subscribers are taking advantage of it.

"What you see a lot of is bands using it to broadcast shows and practice sessions, some people doing their own sketch-comedy shows and we've still got a karaoke bar that broadcasts what's on their stage each weekend."

The biggest audience to date is a live-broadcast online wedding. It didn't last much more than a week.

Novak and crew have been out to major festivals such as E3 and South by Southwest, too. There's even a Paris Hilton video floating around. It's an interview, OK. This site is clean.

"A nice thing is that even if someone misses the live event, you can upload it with pre-recorded video."

There are 100 megabytes of storage for video and five for photos available to each user, and a quick-record feature that loads instantly for video-bloggers is getting some interest.

"More than anything else, I see a lot of bands using us."

A ratings system is in place to judge what's played. Developing an actual business plan is more important.

"We're looking at an advertising model that will bring in revenues eventually. Right now it's more of a tool for your sms site or blog. We'd obviously like to be as big as MySpace in time."

That's the catch.

How does Stickam get enough action to compete with the big guns? Right now, convenience is its strong suit.

The most immediate use I can see for Stickam is to use it as a video-conferencing tool with folks and relatives across the globe. It's cheaper than phone calls and Granny looks hilarious when those occasional glitches make the feed go breakbeat.

Other ideas subscribers on the site have archived with their 500mb of storage include:

n Promo for PHC Extreme Sports with some major-ouch wipeouts.

n Really -- I mean mind-numbingly -- bad hootchie dance numbers.

n Two guys making fun of Creed. Which is like shooting apples in a barrel with a 12-gauge.

n A hippie with a hula hoop who likes house music. Aaaggghhhh!

Brand Spankin New Profile Page!!

We know you've been wanting to add your friends to some kind of friends list, and we've been listening. After working on these new features for the past couple of months, we're finally going to start releasing them. Starting off next week you can start filling in stuff for your profile page. Sometime Mid-August the brand new profile page will come. We think it looks a lot better. On top of the slick new look, the release will have a lot more features as well.
You'll be able to keep all those friends on Stickam in one place. Just request someone to be a friend, and when they accept, they'll be added to your friends page. On top of that, you're going to be able to start placing comments on people's profiles page. So if the person's not live, but you wanted to say hi, just leave a comment on their page and they'll see it when they log on next.
In the next couple of weeks a lot of cool new features will be added to the site, so look forward to them.
Here's a sneak peak at the new profile page:

Check out QueenB

Its Friday AGAIN!!!

Another week has passed us, and the weekend is here again!!
I wanted to tell you about a certain user on Stickam. I don't know
if you've met this user, her username is QueenB. I was just sitting at my desk
with my go live window open when QueenB came in out of nowhere and started giving me a show.
These 2 girls lipsynched their way through about 5 songs. Check one of the videos out that newave
recorded for me. Is there anyone else out there that has experienced the same sort of thing as me?
Leave your story in the commments for others to read.

On another note, some of you may have noticed that when you click on enlarge, it opens like a normal browser
window would open, with an address bar. To fix this, you have to repaste the code. If it opens like a normal
browser, that means you have the old code there. Just repaste the code, and it will be fixed to open like it
should.

Have a good weekend!

Ben

Happy Friday!!

Hey,

Happy Friday everyone. Just dropping by to give you something to read if you're bored.
How are you liking the new edit playlist features? Tell us what you think by adding some comments
at the end of this blog post. Have you started adding other peoples media to your own players? If you take a look at my player,
I got some pretty good videos from other members. http://www.stickam.com/profile/ben
The feature I like even more is seeing who has taken my media. If you go to your "edit videos" you will be able to see how many
people added your videos. So if you haven't noticed that feature out yet, check it out cuz its pretty cool to see who else enjoys your taste.

I'm heading out to the No Cover Magazine show tonight to broadcast it on Stickam. Don't forget to check ou the show. I've been listening to some of these bands music, and they sound pretty cool. We'll be broadcasting from 8:00 PM (PST)

Get Stickam for Free.

Have a good weekend and don't end up like this guy:

See yah,

Ben

New Media Playlist and Bookmark Features

We're adding some great new media features to Stickam this week. The biggest feature is the ability to add other Stickam users media to your player and change the playlist order of all media on your player. Also you are now not only able to bookmark users but to also bookmark anyone's media to watch anytime.

I'll do a quick rundown on how these new features work.

First to add anyone's media to your player go another users media comment page. Beneath the media display you should see the option to "Add to Player" and "Add to Bookmarks" links.

addtoplayerbookmarks.jpg

After adding their media you should find on your corresponding edit media page. For this example ell use video.

On your my video page you can see both your added videos and your uploaded videos.

videocontrol.jpg

All your videos can be either removed or added to your players playlist by clicking the top of each videos box. Any uploaded videos you remove from your playlist will still show up on your profile page but not your player.

removevideo.jpg

You can also get your videos code and edit or delete any of your videos. You cannot edit others added videos but you can delete them from showing up in your "Edit Videos" section.

After deciding which of your added and uploaded videos you want included on your playlist you can edit the play order of your playlist by clicking the "edit Playlist" button.

editplaylist.jpg

From there you can see your "Stickam Player Media Playlist" page:

playlist.jpg

Here you can reorder your playlist queue anyway you want. You can click on the up and down arrows to jump your video to the top or bottom of the playlist queue or click remove to take the video off your playlist.

playlistcloseup.jpg

You can also click and drag any videobox to change its order.

moveplaylist.jpg

When your done re-ordering or removing items on the playlist, simply click the "Update my Playlist" button - updatemyplaylist.jpg to save your changes.

We've also added the ability to Bookmark media. To get to your media bookmarks just click the "My Bookmarks" link on your My Page.

mediabookmark.jpg

You can jump between Members and Media bookmarks by the tabs above. Click the "Remove" Button - bookmarkremove.jpg to get rid of any unwanted bookmarks.

These features won't be out today but should be out before the end of the week.

New Media Comment Email Notification
