Stickam fastens functions in 1 place

The media player called a 'social tool'

An eBay seller could discuss the finer points of an item while holding it aloft for potential buyers to view.
A singer could create music videos promoting compact discs available on a band blog.
A grandmother could view her grandchild's birthday party in progress from across the country.

A recently launched, free media player enables Web camera-equipped computer users to post live, streaming video content on their blog, Myspace or other Web site.

Advanced Video Communications, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in video chat and e-commerce systems, launched its Stickam media player in February.

"Our player isn't just video," said Aaron Novak, Stickam's chief marketing officer. "It is gathering all the media."

Stickam combines video, photos, music and chat functions in one application. Users can even upload media from their cell phone.

"People just use it as a social tool, mostly," Novak said.

Application users upload their video or other media to post, log onto their Stickam accounts and simply cut and paste Java script or HTML (hypertext markup language - the programming language generally used to create Web pages) code directly onto their blog or other Web site.

"Any user can visit your site and see your video and chat with you," Novak said.

Stickam has about 30,000 users since its launch and gained exposure during this year's SXSW independent music festival.

"Bands are using it to promote their shows straight from their Web page," Novak said.

Video will play on any operating system including Linux, Windows and Mac and can be viewed by site visitors whether or not they have a Stickam player.

Stickam works with most Webcams and features 500 MB of storage for videos, photos and music. The per-file limit is 100 MB for videos and 5 MB for images. Users should have Macromedia Flash Player 7 installed. Unlimited bandwidth allows for high frame-rate images that can be viewed by an unlimited number of people at the same time.

"All the current features will be kept free," Novak said. "Eventually we will be doing some advertising for premium accounts."

Blog Nav Bar

You may have noticed the Nav bar at the top of the Blog has remained the same even though the rest of the site has the new style navigation. Hopefully we will be able to rectify this situation soon.

Stickam is a coolio multimedia communications tool

- Marc’s Voice (A founder of Macromedia and CEO of Broadband Mechanics)

"I just put one up on my blog. Now you call can listen to some of my original music from the early 80’s and some kid videos. This looks pretty coolio. " Read more

ActiveX update and Stickam

If you have the new ActiveX update for Internet Explorer installed, you will have to click on the player on the profile page to activate the player. You should see something like this when you mouse over a Stickam Player in IE:
activex.jpg
We are modifying our code so you don’t have to do this on stickam.com but for any Stickam player on an external site, you will still need to click to activate the player. Your best bet to avoid this issue with all ActiveX media (this update effects all websites, not just Stickam) is to avoid IE entirely. Might I suggest Firefox...

Web muscle

Everyone knows the Web is a marvelous device for sharing -- or, if you prefer, stealing -- music. Until recently, though, it has been primarily an outlet for the mass delivery -- licit and illicit -- of music. Now it may be morphing into something new -- a vehicle for the discovery, exposure and popular winnowing of new musical talent. "Read More"

Bands and the Long Tail of Internet Promotion

Today I had an interview with Scott Galupo of the Washington Times. He was looking for some insight into methods bands are using the internet to promote themselves and wether the music industry will embrace these methods. Obviously I gave Stickam a mention in terms of a free tool bands can use for self promotion. Really though there are tons of ways for bands to get their name out there, they just need to use the tools to their full potential.

As for wether the industry will embrace these methods and tools, I think we'll have to wait and see. Really the Recording Industry has been moving glacially slow in terms of the changes on the internet. The fact is a band can find an audience and promote themselves online without the need for the Recording Industry. The Long Tail effect can be seen in full effect on the internet, all it takes is a band to go out there and embrace it.

The article should be published on Friday. I'll link it once its up.
